Sharp Stick in the Eye Tshirt

I had a special birthday boy request for this tshirt — so I made it and now it’s available to all. (note — it’s been designed specifically for dark colors.) The origin of the doodle was from a meeting I attended at the last job — I specifically drew it knowing that my boss would think that I’d rather stick a sharp stick in my eye than sit in another meeting. However, I actually loved meetings there because I could get a lot of drawings done.

Now. I promise to stop churning out goods & wears and get back to doodling. It’s been a tough September.

In my physics class in high school, my friend Rich and I used to talk about how we’d rather stick hot pokers in our eyes than continue under the pressure of homework, exams, quizzes, and projects.

I thought of Rich recently when sitting in a long meeting at work and sketched this guy. Funny, Rich is now a middle school science teacher in southern Maryland.

My boss thought it was an indicator of my feelings for sitting through the meeting. Really, I just wanted to draw a picture of a guy that pulled his eye out with a stick.

An Eye On Christmas

Working on some roughs of the mcglinch.com holiday card. Came up with this idea tonight when the kids and I drove by the local greenhouse display on the way over to the Chester Springs Studio holiday fine crafts & art show. The kids weren’t thrilled with my concept.

Big Eye

This sketch was really big sketch. Biggest I’ve done in a decade, maybe? Usually, I confine myself to the bottom of my notebook, a sticky note, or other scrap of paper that fits in among the mess on my desk.

I drew this in the kids’ basement craft room which I fully intend to take over in the coming weeks/months/years.

It’s drawn on the last piece of newsprint from a roll that I got from The Daily Local News in 1981 when we needed them for making banners and posters at Henderson High School. They used to — and perhaps still do — give away the ‘end of the roll’ of newsprint if you asked nicely.

This guy reminds me of this cow.

Return of the annoying concert goer

My wife and I have gotten back into the concert-going thing over the last 6 years. We’ve focused on select artists or bands we really like and venues where we can really get close-up and have that ‘intimate’ feel with the performer.

Friday night we spent the evening with Chris Difford of Squeeze fame at Philadelphia’s Tin Angel. By having an over-priced dinner at Serrano downstairs we were able to have reserved seats for the show upstairs.

At virtually every show there is an ‘annoying fan’ sitting way too close to us. At this show, it was the guy and his wife in front of us, which put them in the front row and saw the need to push having a personal conversation with Chris throughout the show. And when he wasn’t doing that he was continually turning his head around looking for the waiter with a buggy eye and then resuming conversing with his wife during the songs. His head would turn a la The Exorcist kid and that buggy eye would roam the back of the room.

Other annoying fans in the past have been the drunkard at the Joe Jackson/Todd Rundgren show that heckled opener-Joe and then spent the whole Todd show, yelling “Todd, yeah, Todd, yeah, Todd” even during Can We Still Be Friends.

The rest are an odd collection of boomers that think we paid out top dollar to hear their lousy renditions masking the folks on stage. Our dream is to start hosting shows in our own living room or back yard.

That’s enough of the rant for the weekend.

Another old sketchbook find. My room-mate and our pals were surfer dudes. Back in the free-wheeling single days, I’d spend some evenings practicing drawing/painting in our South Street apartment ball point pen sketching surfer pix by eye out of his surfer mags then painting them in with acrylic. I used to make birthday cards and post cards out of them. These two never made it out of the sketchbook.

Wrong holiday

I know. It’s the wrong holiday but it’s what i’ve got. Besides, it’s only three and half months away.

The guy with the sparkler stuck in his eye didn’t come out like I wanted. I’ll work on that later.

Now it’s time for a beer and some mint chocolate chip ice cream.
