Parrot Scissor Hands
Was scribbling this along last week and didn't know what it was until someone said it looked like a parrot scissor hands kind of creature. The daughter just watched Edward Scissorhands for the first time and has renewed her love and commitment to all-things Johnny Depp.
While I didn't get to watch it with her, it must be in my head. Here's a neat little Edward Scissorhands claymation clip.

Meine Jacke
I took one or two semesters of German at Temple University while studying there in the 1980s. Unlike my French and Italian in high school, I recall very little of the language I'm sure I learned in college.
One phrase that stuck with me was "meine Jacke".
The professor would act out whatever he was teaching us and I found it quite amusing when he said, "meine Jacke" while he gracefully stroked the lapels of his blazer.
It reminded me of how my father, once, during a heated game of Password, used the hand motion of playing with yo-yo and saying the word, "bob". (The password was "yo yo".) It caused a great ruckus, this illegal use of pantomime. The game quickly fell apart as the highly competitive McGlinchey family exchanged accusations of cheating and foul play.
My kids find it amusing, and a little odd, that the key phrase I remember is "meine Jacke." I find it useful. I actually get to use it a lot when I can't find "meine Jacke."

Struble Trail Creature
We went for a walk on the Struble Trail above Downingtown the other day. The daughter had rushed ahead and encountered this ogre-like creature under the 30-bypass bridge. It wanted to have a poke at her but she dodged its thick pointer finger finger and ran ahead. We came up behind and the creature just kind of shrugged and resumed leaning against the underpass wall.
Now that would be a sensible reason for fencing off the Shyrock property at the northern end of the trail. If only it was that simple.

Office Troll Dude
I said, "Dude."
You pretty much have to beat him with stapler to get him to lay off the equipment and go back to hiding under the conference room table. He likes to give you those yellowy weepy eyes as a bid for sympathy. Doesn't work on me.
It was enough of a hassle that the whole distraction put me off my post-work mission. I guess I'll head over to Victory Friday night.

Tasty Hot Chili
The Mrs asked me before Christmas to come up with some drawings depicting 'enjoyment of food'. This was a quick marker sketch that I vectored in Illustrator then brought back int Photoshop tonight to color it in for the blog. I was playing with a shading technique using 'dissolve' mode paintbrush in Photoshop that Bob Staake, an out-of-this-world illustrator, describes on his site.
For pure amazement check out his video on boingboing that brought him to my attention yesterday.

Cross My Path
Driving home through the woods recently in the dark, this mangled product of alien in-breeding stumbled across the road in front of me. I can't stand when creatures stumble out of the woods at the periphery of my headlight wash -- it scares the hell out of me. For weeks, you'll always think something is there, in the woods, watching, stumbling.

Meet My Monkey
Meet my coffee monkey.
Until I returned to work from a 9 month hiatus 2 years ago (oh, sweet hiatus, I miss you so), I kept coffee to after-dinner/lunch time to go with special treats (cake, cookies, pie, ice cream, and on and on). Throughout all my years of working prior to that, mornings were for OJ and afternoons were for H2O.
My last job put an end to that. Coffee was a morning and afternoon ritual for 'our gang' that I fought hard against but eventually crumbled. Was the 'need to belong' or the 'need for a stimulant' to keep me awake. Whatever, they got me -- now it's me and my monkey... and the mrs. (she's always been a coffee fiend).

Six-Fingered Office Rat
I was working on this watercolor depicting the various dooways and light that lead from my dreary dark and windowless office yesterday when the six-fingered company rat passed by, stopped, gave me his usual 'peace sign' greeting, and then kept moving. He never says anything -- just flashes the peace sign on his creepy six-fingered paw and moves on.

Gorilla in the mist
This foggy scene caught my eye this morning in the parking lot where I get my coffee. A short-school-bus driver was relaxing reading a book and having a smoke leaning against her bus. Then the local gorilla-giant tried one of the oldest tricks in the book in a shameless attempt to catch her unawares. I decided to let it play out to see how it ended but not before taking this snapshot with the cell.
How did it end? Let's just say there's one sorry ape roaming the countryside.

Request-a-doodle: Moat Monster
Anonymous said...Please draw two pictures of the Moat Monster, who lived in the creek that flowed through our neighborhood. One picture should be a professional portrait/head shot, the other full body.
Anyway, all the kids were afraid of him. Of course, all the older kids had "seen him" and tried to scare us with stories. Anyway, my brother and I for some reason imagined him looking kind of like a fat creature from the black lagoon with big fish lips, but wearing a yellow t-shirt that said "Moat Monster."

Request-a-doodle: Humans as Pets; Cats as Masters
ptmcg in tex said...Humans as pets! It would also be cool to see the pets as masters ;-) (preferably cats)
click on the sketch for a larger view of it -- this was a much bigger doodle while the kids and I watched some tube this evening. Fireplace at the request of the son; side table and lamp request by the daughter.

Request-a-doodle: 2 Headed Monster In-n-Out
Smelly Felly said... I'd like a two-headed monster (your choice) riding a tractor in the drive-thru of In-N-Out.
Back in my NoCal-traveling days I never got to hit an In-N-Out for their famous burgers. Some day I'll get back there and that's the first place I'm going after SmellyFelly's.

Request-a-doodle: Funky Donkey
Though the request was in late (by 3 days), I fulfilled it anyway since it was obviously from someone in the family. Imagine the poor creature above being hot pink, about 35 years old, made of pom-pom material and all of about 4 inches long. He was the most popular among our youngest brother's 'animals' but yet he was mean and degrading to everyone. Everyone wanted to be his friend but he would easily trample on your feelings. He taught me early on how to tell the phonies in this world.

Request-a-doodle: Jaden at the ball game with his groundhog and a beer and hot dog
I think I about covered the gamut of requests for doodles in record time. Apologies to Random California/Jaden's parents. His photos are much better. Also, Rizz -- groundhogs can't wave AND hold a beer. Thanks for the requests and we'll open up the request line again this Friday. Keep 'em coming!

airplane creature
Drew this on my flight from PHL on American Airlines. What a difference an airline makes. American rocks. USAir does not.
On this doodle, I took a photo of it with the digital camera this time, rather than the cell phone. came out somewhat better, but think i need to sort out macro mode on the camera to get it optimized/focused.
03-28-2007 UPDATE: here's a scan of the sketch. looks much better. Need to buy me one of those portable scanner thingies.

wild things
This is an old doodle from the archives. We're in San Antonio, TX this week. Today before visiting the NCAA South Regional shootaround at the AlamoDome, we took the kids to the Animal Sanctuary of the United States Wild Animal Orphanage. It's amazing to the see the number and kinds of wild animals that people try to keep as pets and entertainment. Lots and lots of tigers, cougars, a couple bears, and even a couple of ligers -- test tube crossings of tigers and lions.

Chimping around
made this the other day on artpad.art.com and since I haven't solved my doodling-on-the-road issue, this will have to do for now.
